Congress : Unseal the Deals!
This petition is now closed.
Over the past 20 years, members of Congress have paid over
$17 million in secret settlements over workplace disputes. Their names are kept
hidden from the public, but they use our money to buy the silence of victims.
While not all of these instances involve sexual misconduct, the recent
revelations about Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) tell us that at least some of the
money has been used to settle cases of sexual harassment and assault.
By signing this letter, I ask you to unseal the deals and make any future deals public. The voting public deserves to know how our elected officials conduct themselves in office. Under the current system, they face no accountability. They can use our money to make problems of misconduct simply disappear. Every year, you set aside taxpayer money for the Office of Compliance. The Office of Compliance funnels the money into dispute settlements as they arise throughout the fiscal year. This is our money, and we should know where it ends up.
We cannot rid Congress of sexual misconduct unless we can identify the perpetrators and hold them responsible for their behavior. We ask you to #UnsealTheDeals in the interest of transparency.
