The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) has released recommendations for K-12 schools relating to reopening schools. Their gating criteria recommends in-person teaching for elementary schools while in the Green, Yellow and Red criteria. The Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) has deviated from the JCDHE recommendations by not having separate guidance for elementary school children. It is simply foolish to believe elementary school children can learn via remote instruction and those ages should have their own criteria, per the JCDHE guidance. Under the SMSD plan, only under the Green gating criteria would elementary school children be able to attend fully in-person.
We demand that Superintendent Fulton provide in-person instruction for elementary school in the Green, Yellow and Red criteria per the JCDHE guidance. Parents who want this option should be given it. This does not impact parents who only want remote learning, they can still opt for that.
