A total of 200 million individuals across every state are exposed to a serious health risk. Chromium-6, a chemical known to cause cancer in laboratory rats and mice, could very well cause the next water crisis in the United States.
In the words of Erin Brockovich, “The fact that in the United States, the richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world that more than 200 million Americans are potentially drinking water with elevated levels of a known human carcinogen is nothing short of an outrage.”
Although the EPA has promised to release a public report in 2017, the government agency is not acting fast enough to address this imminent crisis. California is the only state to have a law capping the amount of chromium-6 in their water supply, and mandating utility companies to conduct testing prior to disbursement. The EPA has regulated the total amount of chromium in the nation’s water supply, this does not target the specific chemical alarming the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which commissioned a nationwide test of our tap water and found the chromium-6 in the water supplies of all 50 states.
On a federal level, the EPA’s legislation on the subject is 20 years old, and in dire need of a face-lift. Help us fight for clean drinking water, and stricter supervision of the industrial waste that amplifies its toxicity. Sign the petition to demand the EPA require all utility companies to test their water before it ends up in the water that you drink, rinse off in, and brush your teeth with.
