The Marketplace Fairness Act has been proposed in Congress, but its outcome would be anything but fair.
The bill would allow state and local governments to tax businesses that have no physical presence within their state lines. That means that your Amazon purchases and Netflix subscriptions would become more expensive.
Businesses that sell less than $1 million in revenue annually would be exempt from taxation. This is just another example of government interfering in the free market to pick which companies win and which companies lose – and as always, the meddling means higher prices for consumers.
