Leander ISD Board of Trustees : Restore Bus Service to Vista Ridge Neighborhoods!
This petition is now closed.
The Leander Independent School District has withheld bus service from students of Camacho Elementary and Leander Middle School who live in the Vista Ridge, Villas at Vista Ridge, and Vista Ridge Estates neighborhoods. The bike route to these schools from affected neighborhoods is dangerous as children are expected to ride their bikes in the road in a bike lane separated from vehicle traffic by nothing but a white line, and which ends well before reaching either school.
The one way to fix this problem is to restore bus service to Camacho Elementary and Leander Middle School to the Vista Ridge neighborhoods. This would significantly reduce the number of children using this dangerous bike route and consequently reduce the risk of a major tragedy.
Please sign this petition to demand that the Leander Independent School District restore bus service to keep children out of the road!
To Leander ISD Board of Trustees:
The route that children bike to Camacho Elementary and Leander Middle School from the Vista Ridge, Villas at Vista Ridge, and Vista Ridge Estates neighborhoods is inherently dangerous. The bike lane on Vista Ridge/Municipal Drive is poorly designed and places our children, some as young as five and six years old, at too great a risk. We need bus service restored to our neighborhoods before an unthinkable tragedy occurs.
Bike lanes in the street are intended for adult riders who are experienced enough to safely ride in the street alongside vehicle traffic and have the ability to evaluate risk. Young children lack the experience, risk assessment capacity, and bicycle handling capability necessary to safely ride in a bike lane in the street.
Children do not ride in a straight line as close to the curb as possible. They wobble, veer, and make sudden and erratic movements that can easily place them in danger. Under no circumstances should children be using a bike lane separated from cars, trucks, buses, and commercial vehicles by a matter of inches and a painted white line.
Merely fixing the current flaws with the bike lane by prohibiting parking in it and extending it all the way to the elementary and middle schools will not solve the safety problem because these “fixes” do nothing to address the fact that young children lack the experience and sound judgment necessary to ride in the road alongside vehicles.
We urge you, before an unthinkable tragedy occurs and a child using the bike lane is struck by a vehicle, restore bus service to these neighborhoods. This is the one solution that can substantially reduce the risk of tragedy by minimizing the number of children biking to school.
