Academy of Motion Pictures : Kick Out Sexual Predators
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences took a big
step when it revoked Harvey Weinstein’s membership. Weinstein had been accused
of sexual assault by a tidal wave of victims who came forward to share their
stories. Weinstein was only the second person in the Academy’s history to be stripped
of membership. Unfortunately, Hollywood’s sexual assault problem is bigger than
one person, and therefore requires a larger response.
To Academy of Motion Pictures:
Your organization brings together the greatest minds of the movie industry. Unfortunately, several sexual predators are among their ranks. Because you are the people who write movie history, in part by deciding the Oscar winners, your organization is of special importance.
By signing this letter, I state that the movie industry should have no place for sexual predators, and that people who sexually harass or assault children do not belong in the Academy. I ask you to revoke the membership of the following:
Kevin Spacey: Allegedly assaulted a 14 year old boy.
Roman Polanski: Accused of drugging and raping a 13 year old girl; took a plea deal.
Woody Allen: Allegedly sexually abused his own children. Is now married to his adopted daughter.
I want to see Hollywood take the most basic ethical stand against people who harm children. Please revoke the membership of these three men, and of any other Academy member who is exposed as an abuser.
