Trial lawyers from all over the country bring out-of-state lawsuits into Missouri’s courts. This frivolous litigation costs Missouri businesses, consumers, and state and local taxpayers a significant amount of money.
Businesses consider the lawsuit climates of the states where they are looking to expand, and Missouri's legal climate is scaring businesses away, which negatively impacts our economy.
Sign the petition now to urge your lawmakers to pass sensible legal reforms and keep frivolous, out-of-state lawsuits away from our state.
To Missouri Legislature:
The recent $4.7 billion verdict against Johnson & Johnson proves that Missouri’s court system is in dire need of reform. How can we let lawyers from outside Missouri continue to bring cases against businesses that aren’t based in our state? Legal experts all over the US point to Missouri’s weak venue statutes as the reason for these frivolous lawsuits. That has to change, or our reputation will continue to keep businesses away from the Show Me State.
In the next legislative session, I urge you to:
• Limit in-state forum shopping so that cases are tried where an injury actually occurred.
• Limit the ability to join plaintiffs when alleged injuries arise from separate incidents or separate purchases of a product.
• Clearly define what constitutes a “place of residence” when determining where a case should be tried.
85% of businesses say a state’s lawsuit environment influences major business decisions, such as where to expand and hire. Lawsuit abuse will continue to keep our state’s legal climate at the bottom of the rankings, unless you do something. Please, take action this session.
Thank you for your consideration.
