Department of Homeland Security : STOP Foreign Nationals from Illegally Overstaying their Visas!
Most illegal immigration to the United States does not happen across our southern border. Far more foreign nationals come to America legally as visitors, but then overstay their visas - making them illegal immigrants. This violates federal immigration law. However, we hear almost nothing about it in the mainstream press or on television news. This has to STOP!
Our VISA program has a huge hole in it, and it appears that nothing is being done about it. It is time Homeland Security takes action on this visa overstay issue.
To Department of Homeland Security:
Americans count on you to secure our borders. We must not forget that illegal immigration is not limited to people breaking the law to cross our southern border; the majority of illegal immigration happens when otherwise legal visitors to this country decide to overstay their visas.
Visa overstays have outnumbered illegal border crossings every year since 2008. The DHS needs to be following up on these to make sure people leave the country as required by federal immigration law.
Every year, around 600,000 people overstay their visas in America. These people may have left the day after their visas expired, or they could still reside here and plan on staying permanently. DHS needs to track the visas so we know IF and WHEN a visa recipient leaves the country.
This is a matter of national security. On September 11, 2001, two of the hijackers had expired visas. Two more had valid visas but had previously overstayed in this country on expired ones.
Of course, the vast majority of visitors who overstay their visas are not terrorists. Still, until DHS starts following up on visa overstays, we don't know what we don't know. Our government needs to track these people so we have answers as to where they are when their visas expire and take action to remove them from American soil if necessary.
