Incidents of protesters burning and stomping on the American
flag have been on the rise, particularly during protests against the results of
the presidential election.
Videos show mobs of protestors desecrating the flag at
rallies in major cities. Colleges across the country have seen an increased
incidence of public flag burning, particularly at American University, Brown
University, and Hampshire College.
Legislation to ban flag burning passed the House of Representatives in
2006, only to fail in the Senate by a margin of one vote. Now is the time to
legally protect America’s most treasured symbol.
The individuals choosing to desecrate the American flag are not engaging in peaceful acts of protest. The videos of flag burnings show angry mobs deliberately inciting hatred and often also destroying public property.
They are promoting violence, societal disruption, and dividing our nation with hate.
The First Amendment should not be misjudged to allow individuals the right to participate in aggressive behavior, destruction of property, or hate crimes.
We call on members of Congress to pass a law classifying the purposeful desecration of the flag as hate speech against one’s fellow Americans.
