In the context of a city label, the term ‘sanctuary’ can be unnervingly misleading.
The only people it provides safety to are the illegal immigrants who are taken into custody by state and local law enforcement. It violates rule of law by disregarding federal requests to hold these individuals when they are found to be in the country illegally.
These policies promote violence by not holding criminals accountable for their actions, on the assumption that it will build trust with the population. The Obama administration chose to support pro-illegal immigration agreements, despite the history of crime in sanctuary cities, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. Now the Trump administration is threatening to stop funding them.
According to CNN, “more than 200 state and local jurisdictions have policies that call for not honoring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention requests.” This statement went directly to Congress from the agency's director, Sarah Saldana.
Several residents of these cities have lost their loved ones, despite the policy’s veil of public safety. Help us send Congress a message: we will not let any more blood be shed by actors who fail to comply with federal mandates. We will no longer accept the idea of felons being released into the general public, only to watch them wreak havoc on American citizens. Nor will we stand for funding to state and local governments if they fail to comply with federal policies on immigration.
Where is our sanctuary?
