Florida State Legislature : Stand against legislation that will massively expand gambling in Florida. Take Action TODAY!
Today Floridians face a great risk that threatens our communities, economy, and family-friendly brand: Gambling.
Before 1977, Nevada was the only place in America where high stakes casino gambling was legal. That year, casinos were legalized in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It did not take gambling interests long to target what they considered then, and now, as the biggest prize – Florida.
But this is Florida - Where families are raised and businesses that power America thrive. We are the envy of the nation with low taxes and a prosperous economy with a family-friendly brand. We've never relied on casinos before for prosperity - Why gamble on them now?
Legislation has been introduced to bring more slot machines and casinos to Florida. We must take action to stop this legislative push to massively expand gambling throughout our state. Let your State Senator know where you stand TODAY.
To Florida State Legislature:
I’m writing today as a concerned citizen, to urge you in the strongest possible terms to vote “NO” on Senate Bill 8 when it comes before you for a vote, in committee or for final passage.
This legislation represents a broad and massive expansion of gambling. It would provide an opening for international interests that have long wanted to build a casino in Miami, and, as reported by the Miami Herald, would make Florida the “nation’s slot machine capital.”
It violates the state constitution by bypassing a vote of the people to legalize new casino gambling, and it violates the promise to Florida voters when the amendment to allow slots in Miami-Dade and Broward counties was narrowly approved in 2004.
Senate Bill 8 would be a disaster for our state, in so many ways.
The gambling creep that has taken a hold of Florida over the last thirty years has done tremendous harm, and this expansion would double down on the damage. It would hurt families by enabling addiction and crime, it would hurt local businesses, and it would have a tremendous negative impact on our overall quality of life and Florida’s family-friendly brand.
I am asking you to respect the will of the people, by standing up to the gambling industry’s push to legalize casino gambling throughout the Sunshine State.
Florida voters have soundly rejected wide-spread casino gambling in our state three times since 1978, and polling indicates that today less than a quarter of Floridians believe we should have more gambling in our state. The same polling also shows that an overwhelming majority believes that voters should decide gambling policy in Florida – not state lawmakers in Tallahassee.
The bottom line is you cannot limit or control gambling by expanding it… and expanded gambling will have huge negative consequences throughout our great state.
Again, I strongly and respectfully urge you to vote “NO” on Senate Bill 8.
